Pumping surf forecast for Animal Newquay open title decider at the famous Fistral Beach

Stoksie Ph L Griggi

pic: Stokesy by L.Griggi

Big swells are forecast to hit Fistral beach for the Animal Newquay Open, the final stop on UK Pro Surf Tour.  The 2009 championship is the closest for years with six surfers all in with a good chance to take the Open Championship title.

With the forecast showing 11ft waves at 12 second intervals all is set for an epic title decider.

The surfers best five results out of the six UKPST events count and it really couldn’t be closer. After complicated number crunching three surfers are in pole position and guaranteed victory with a win. Bude’s Reubyn Ash, home boy Tom Butler and Animal rider Alan Stokes will all claim the title by taking the win. Mark Harris and Ollie Adams can take the title but require the others to finish outside of the top three. Last years champion Reubin Pearce has the most to do but will still be champion should the others get knocked out early.

Ding ding, bells out, final round...

Oli Adams wins Welsh leg of BPSA Tour

AXl.DOH Pro UKPST Oli Adams Winner photo by Jason Feast (4)

Oli Adams wins his first UK Pro Surf Tour event, the AXL / DOH Pro at Rest Bay Porthcawl. Former British and New Zealand Junior champion excelled in the surf conditions to take the title of the biggest surf event in Wales.

Oli commented “People do not understand how much this means to me, I have been suffering from an illness over the last few years and am now getting back to full fitness. To beat Johnny, Russ and Egor in the final is a fantastic feeling”

Second place went to English Champion Johnny Fryer (Isle of White), whose vertical backhand attack managed to outpoint the rest of the field. Third went to wave-shy Russell Winter (Newquay) and fourth to Mark ‘Egor’ Harris who has now reached the final of the last four UK Pro Surf Tour events.

In the Under 16 Boys division Leon Mansfield (Newquay) showed his class by winning his second UK Pro Surf Tour event in a row consolidating his position at the top of the rankings. Second place went to Zack Lawton (Croyde), his best result on the Grommet tour. A remarkable third went to Under 12 surfer Max Payne (Wadebridge) and coming fourth local surfer Max Tucker.

Dave Reed Tour Director said “The ninth Welsh UK Pro Surf Tour event, the AXL / DOH Pro was blessed with good waves showing the quality of the surf in this region. Thanks to the support of the sponsors AXL Distribution and Double Overhead at short notice, the event has been one of the best we have seen in Wales. With 12 months to plan for next year and the support of the sponsors I am sure it will be even better”.

Winning the Relentless Money Move for the Best Cut-back was Matt Capel (S Devon), who took home £250. The King of Watersports highest scoring wave went to Oli Adams who achieved the best wave of the contest in his semi-final heat.
Many thanks go to all the sponsors including: Billabong, Santa Cruz, Sanuk, The Realm and Carve Eyeware.

The tour now moves onto the last stop Newquay in two weeks time where five surfers are challenging to win the title lead by Bude surfer Reubyn Ash.

The Specials 30 years on and still magic! Cardiff CIA November 2009

A nightout at the CIA watching a band I used to bop too on the south bank when I was 12 years old and represented me and my generation their lyrics still ring true today.

I just hope they will be at Glastonbury 2010 for the big 40th party.  The only downside was that I missed 2 hours of Crab Island fun this morning, by the time I paddled out I had to make do with an hour and a half of fun.. nevermind... 'I loved da 'Rude Boys..'

Below a personal favourite from The Specials...

When in Newquay, Cornwall you must visit the new Bilbo surf shop (used to be Tunnel vision surf shop)

Bilbo surf shop use to be tunnel vision in Newquay

Rhino

After surfing at Fistral beach yesterday morning we popped into probably the best surf shop in the UK by a mile.  The surf shop is called 'Bilbo surf shop' and can be found opposite the new sainsbury's in town  (& used to be called Tunnel Vision surf shop).

The guys have spent a great deal of time and money developing the shop which spans two floors and includes a cool cafe which offers lush milkshakes my daughter informs me!

Anyway, if your in Newquay looking for surfing hardwear pop in and see the guys as they have a wide range of the latest and greatest in the surfing trade!

We arrived back in Mumbles last night after an 8 hour road trip! Nightmare, never mind the surf is picking up and the week ahead is going to be super fun here on Gower with several winter swells hitting us between Sunday - Friday, have fun and if in doubt do not go out.

I love Hawaii, it's that simple. Every wave tests you and your ability. I truly believe that if one is to be a surfer he/she must travel to the home of surfing to sample it's delights at least once.
